How is spousal maintenance calculated?

In what may be the most common formula, a judge will subtract 20% of the lower-earning spouse’s income from 30% of the higher-earning spouse’s income, and the resulting number is the amount awarded. The length of the marriage will then determine how long spousal maintenance is paid. However, these formulas are a starting point and the judge will consider the unique circumstances of your case.
